Bioness Foot Drop System
Traverse City, patient, Elizabeth Wallaker has seen tremendous results after she visited Teter Orthotics and prosthetics for her foot drop. Foot drop is the dropping of the forefoot due to weakness or in other words, difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. Foot drop can be caused by nerve or muscle damage, nerve or muscle disorders or central nervous system disorders. Foot drop can cause constant pain and numbness which can lead to injuries. Having foot drop can make every day life tasks difficult to do.
At Teter Orthotics and Prosthetics in Traverse City Michigan, Elizabeth Wallaker was treated with the Bioness L300 which is a foot drop system that helps certain individuals walk with increased speed and improved balance – allowing freedom and independence.
The Bioness L300 uses electrical stimulation to stimulate the nerves that control the muscles that lift the front part of the foot. The Bioness L300 has three wireless devices that communicate with each other and work together. A Stimulation Cuff, a Control Unit and a Gait Sensor are wireless and offer no cumbersome wires for the user. The gait sensor senses gait speed and transmits that information to the stimulation cuff to deliver an electrical stimulation pulse. The stimulation pulse activates the nerves which control the muscles used to lift the top of the foot. The Bioness L300 adapts to changes in walking speed and terrain and helps individuals walk more easily, giving them confidence while minimizing falls and injuries.
Wallaker also likes to mention how determined the staff was at Teter Orthotics and Prosthetics to get her Bioness L300 funded. Wallaker says “Thanks to Teter Orthotics and Prosthetics [in Traverse City Michigan] and the research they did, they were able to find me full funding for my Bioness L300, which was incredible. I couldn’t believe that they would go to that length.”
The Bioness L300 has also made Jodi Simmer’s life dramatically easier too. Jodi is a Traverse City Michigan resident and when she came to Teter Orthotics and Prosthetics, her goal was to be able to walk her dog. Jodi says, “After two weeks of using the Bioness L300 my husband and I were out [walking the dog] and we were both in tears because it was something we had thought would never happen… Teter Orthotics and Prosthetics has made a huge difference in my life.”
